Public Mutual Road Show at Sek K. Residensi

We had an opportunity to meet many people when we participated Karnival Emas 50 Sek. Keb. Residensi. We were promoting Public Mutual Unit Trust. Me myself meet few intresting people with many of their investment experience really amused me.

Malay being Malay will always have more intrest to Ala Pak Man Telo investment which promises big returns with '0' risk. I tried my best explaining to them the benifit of investing in Unit Trust rather than investing in uncertified investment such as Swiss Cash!

I was really exhausted, many people visited our booth & we were lucky enough as many have at least got some idea what is Unit Trust especially they at least have heard about Public Mutual.
Looking forward to call all my prospect customers who ia hope will still be intrested in investing in Public Mutual.

Lunar Eclipse

A lunar eclipse occurs whenever the Moon passes through some portion of the Earth's shadow. This can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned exactly, or very closely so, with the Earth in the middle. Hence, there is always a full moon the night of a lunar eclipse. The type and length of an eclipse depend upon the Moon's location relative to its orbital nodes. The next total lunar eclipse occurs on December 21, 2010.

Lowest Point?

RECENTLY, our stock market has been affected by a lot of negative news, like unsettling US subprime issues, the weak economic growth as well as high political risks. Many retailers have lost confidence in the market.

Yet there are some who are trying their best to predict the stock market bottom, hoping to catch stocks at the cheapest price.

It is always a tough job to predict the lowest point in any stock market cycles. It requires some understanding of business cycles, which can be interpreted as fluctuations in economic activity.

It can be made up of expansions and contractions in the overall economy.

A peak in the business cycle happens when the economy reaches its peak and starts to decline. A trough in the business cycle occurs when the economy touches its bottom and starts to recover.

This is the turning point of any business cycle. Normally, stock market at this stage will show a confirmed sign of market turnaround.

The movement of stock prices is highly influenced by the companies’ profits. From a macro view, there are three determinants for corporate profits - consumer spending, industrial production, and services and capital spending.

Among the three, the key determinant is consumer spending.

As a result of the hike in oil prices, a high inflation rate and the overall weak economic growth have caused some slowdown in consumer spending.

As the main driver of consumer spending is personal income, which is largely derived from wages and the salaries, high inflation rate has caused some consumers to hold back on their spending.

To companies, the weak consumer spending will lead to lower demand for their products and eventually build up in inventories.

Most companies may take measures to reduce inventories, first by reducing purchases. Some factories may start to slow down their production if they see demand is getting weaker and, if this continues, it will lead to excess capacity, which subsequently might lead to retrenchment.

The overall industrial production rate will slow down while the unemployment rate will go up higher.

If the situation continues to weaken, some manufacturers may hold back plant expansion programmes.

Some proposed mergers or acquisitions may be put aside as not many company owners want to take the risk of expanding their business during this situation.

The slowdown in capital spending will lead to a further decline in future corporate profits.

The stock market is sensitive to future corporate profits. As consumer spending is the main determinant in corporate profits, any weakening in consumer spending will cause a big sell-down in stock prices.

This explained why the market sentiment was weak whenever oil prices edged up higher.

Where are we now?

According to Joseph H. Ellis in his book Ahead of the Curve, there are four stages of economic downturn - Stage 1: The peak; Stage 2: A modest slowing; Stage 3: Intensifying worry; and Stage 4: The advent of recession.

Stage 1 is where consumer spending and real gross domestic product (GDP) are increasing at a strong pace whereas Stage 2 is where the growth rate of consumer spending and real GDP only shows a slight decline.

Given our present situation, we are in Stage 3 with a higher inflation rate, slower growth in consumer spending and real GDP.

At this stage, the market may tumble about 20% from the peak. Some economists begin to worry that there are some possibilities that the overall economy may drop into a recession.

We do not think we will enter Stage 4 even with further decline in consumer spending and higher unemployment rate. It is not necessary that every time when we are in Stage 3, it will surely be followed by Stage 4. There are periods when we may revert to Stage 2 from Stage 3.

The decline in oil prices recently has provided some relief. Even though some economists commented that the worst may not be over yet, lower oil prices will contribute to a lower inflation rate.

Even though at this juncture it is still very difficult to confirm the trend reversal, the recent drop in oil prices has definitely helped to improve the overall consumer sentiment.

Understanding business cycles will help us to understand better stock market cycles. We always believe that we need to know what causes the market movement, then hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

Big Give

Big Give is a version of Bersamamu conducted by Oprah. Though it's a reality show, it was really touching to see the happiness brought to the life of these unfortunate people.

I was just wondering, how actually that I can contribute! In Malaysia or even in my neighborhood itself there are needy people who wishes their needs fulfilled.

I’ve always told my wife that, we are so gifted that we can eat whatever we wish to eat. But for some people, they can only eat what they have for the day.

Previously when I was in Kapar, I’ve heard a lot of the Bersamamu kinda of story. There was one guy that I know living in the Kampung Tok Muda. He himself got some disability but he was the sole bread winner for his family. Initially he was only doing some odd work. He can’t secure any permanent job mainly due to his disability. But now Alhamdulillah he has secured a permanent job. He got some heart pinching story that sure to shed tears even to the rock hearted people.

His family has suffered days even without a basic plain rice meal!!! It was just unbelievable that there are people outside there who can even secure a decent basic meal.

Watching the Big Give at NTV 7 have prompted me to ponder. There are always means & ways for us individually to help these needy people. Apart from us contributing money we could creatively help them.

I’m posting this post here to get comments and suggestions from the readers on how we can creatively contribute to the needy people.

Big Give

"Oprah's Big Give™" the exciting and much-anticipated new primetime series that defies television convention with the bold idea of people competing to give rather than get, will premiere SUNDAY, MARCH 2 (9:00-10:02 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

In eight one-hour episodes, a diverse, determined and competitive group of ten people are given the challenge of a lifetime — to change the lives of complete strangers in the most creative and dramatic ways. In this intense competition, the contestants criss-cross the country, scrambling to find ways to impact the fates and fortunes of unsuspecting people who are in for the surprise of their lives. Lives will be changed in the blink of an eye as contestants race against time to create once-in-a-lifetime experiences and also give away hundreds of thousands of dollars. Who will be the lucky few to get a "Big Give"… and who will get all that cash?

The series premiere, "Episode 101," kicks off in Los Angeles, where Oprah hands ten contestants sealed envelopes with only a picture and the name of a complete stranger. Under intense pressure, they must give big to change this person's life in just five days. The contestants must use their creativity and resources to generate the most powerful and sensational ways to make a real difference, and with the clock ticking, the competition, drama and emotion mount and the contestants' stamina, creativity and drive are tested. This first dramatic challenge will send one person packing.

Throughout the episodes, Oprah makes multiple special appearances and turns up in various locations to surprise the contestants with dramatic new twists and turns. "The show is fun, entertaining and powerful television with a real heart," said Winfrey. "America will just love the heart of this show."

As the competition tightens, big Hollywood stars join "Oprah's Big Give," raising the stakes and turning up the heat. Celebrity guests include Jennifer Aniston, John Travolta and Jada Pinkett-Smith, tennis legend Andre Agassi, skateboarding idol Tony Hawk, racing star Danica Patrick, plus more.

The series' host is Nate Berkus, a popular television personality and frequent contributor to "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and O, The Oprah Magazine, and one of the world's most recognized interior designers.

At the end of each hour, the contestants must face a panel of three expert judges who will judge them on their leadership, accomplishments, creativity and presentation. They include world-renowned "Naked" chef and philanthropist Jamie Oliver, NFL star, nine-time Pro Bowler and Boys & Girls Club Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez, and wife of Chris Rock and charity founder Malaak Compton-Rock.

In the end, there is only one rule in "Oprah's Big Give": YOU EITHER GIVE BIG OR YOU GO HOME. In every episode, the contestants must each find innovative and ingenious ways to impact the lives of strangers, or they risk elimination at the hands of the judging panel.

As the episodes continue, the "gives" get even bigger, the guest stars get brighter and tensions mount, all culminating in the exciting series finale where The Biggest Giver will become the biggest winner. What the contestants don't know — and only viewers do — is that Oprah Winfrey will surprise The Biggest Giver with a whopping $1 million prize.

Thousands of hopefuls auditioned to compete in "Oprah's Big Give." The ten contestants were discovered in auditions held in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Nashville and represent all walks of life, from a pageant queen and a pre-med student to a paraplegic and a young dot-com millionaire. They include:

  • Angelo, 30, a West Point graduate and Iraq War veteran from Ann Arbor, MI
  • Brandi, 23, a pageant queen from Chicago, IL
  • Cameron, 22, an entrepreneur and dot-com millionaire from Roanoke, VA
  • Carlana, 38, a paraplegic, author and media executive from Glendale, CA
  • Eric, 37, a former model who now works as a disaster relief worker from Boston, MA
  • Kim, 39, an NFL marketing specialist from Brentwood, TN
  • Marlene, 37, a train attendant from Chicago, IL
  • Olussegun "Sheg", 23, a pre-med student from Nashville, TN
  • Rachael, 31, a singer and actress from Los Angeles, CA
  • Stephen, 43, a real estate developer from Bedford, NY
In addition to Los Angeles, other episodes were filmed in Denver, Houston, Miami, Atlanta, New York City and Chicago.

"Oprah's Big Give" is partnering with corporate sponsors to help the contestants with their acts of goodwill.

Target is the production's primary sponsor and major retail partner, providing key funds for the overall challenges, prizes, and helping people.

Ford, the show's official automotive partner, is providing a range of vehicles necessary for the contestants to complete their challenges.

And "Oprah's Big Give" competitors use product and services throughout the series from Sprint — the exclusive communications partner — as they find ways to solve their challenges and help others.

In addition, United Airlines is the official carrier for the series and The Hilton Family of Hotels is the official hotel for the series.

All sponsors and partners will be pitching in to "give big" throughout the series.
